Tukino Ski Field is Mt Ruapehu's lesser-known gem.
Located on the mountain's eastern slopes, in the scenic center of New Zealand's North Island, the Tukino Access Road is off the Desert Rd, between Turangi and Waiouru.

The turnoff onto Tukino Access Rd is from the Desert Rd, State Highway 1, approximately:
40km South of Turangi
22km North of Waiouru
Lower Car Park (Base Camp)
The lower car park for 2WD vehicles is approx 7km from the highway on a gravel road suitable for most vehicles.
From there you can book our Mountain Shuttle Service to take you up to the field & lodges.
The 4WD only access road continues a further 7km direct to the ski field, and lodges.
Please do not attempt to drive up the Tukino mountain road until you have confirmed the road is open.
If you don't have a 4WD vehicle, or don't wish to drive all the way up to the field, our mountain shuttle service can transport you and your family from the lower carpark.
This season (2019) we will be operating a Complimentary Shuttle Service between the 2WD Car Park (Base Camp) and the Tukino Skifield. This service will be operated by our Volunteer Skifield Staff.
Click here for details of our Mountain Transport Service (Shuttle).
Tukino Ski Field and the lodges are accessible to four-wheel-drive off-road vehicles via the Tukino Access Road when conditions permit.
As mountain conditions are changeable at short notice, you must call to check the road is open, before you proceed past the lower car park. Use of the Tukino Access Road is at your own risk.
Before attempting the 4WD access road:
Call to check latest conditions
Pack wet weather essentials in a carry bag just in case you have to get out of your vehicle for any reason.
