Tukino Skifield Calls for Volunteers to Keep the Slopes Open in 2025

Ruapehu, NZ — Facing growing financial pressure, Tukino Skifield will operate almost entirely with volunteers for the 2025 season—and they’re calling on passionate individuals to join the team.

Tukino, known for its backcountry charm and community-driven spirit, is embracing a new model to stay open: a fully volunteer-run operation.

“We’ve reached a point where paid staffing through the whole season is no longer sustainable,” says a TMCA spokesperson. “But with the help of dedicated volunteers, we believe Tukino can not only survive, but thrive.”

Volunteers Needed for a Range of Roles

From snow safety officers and ski patrol to tow operators and ticket office staff, there are numerous positions open—many of which include training. While key roles like Skifield Manager and Snow Safety ARM require certified personnel, others are open to anyone with enthusiasm and a willingness to learn.

Why Volunteer?

Aside from the chance to be part of a close-knit mountain community, volunteers gain unique experience, develop practical skills, and help preserve one of New Zealand’s most distinctive ski fields. While the roles are unpaid, a potential end-of-season reward is being considered.

“We’re not just asking for help—we’re inviting people to be part of something special,” the spokesperson adds.

How to Get Involved

Those interested can submit a short bio or CV to employment@tukino.org, outlining their availability and any relevant experience. Weekend availability is especially appreciated, but all help is welcome.
